The Magnetic Bond

The Caped Crusader and The Boy Wonder; magnetically-bonded.

The Caped Crusader and The Boy Wonder: A magnetic bond.

Storytelling for superpowers.

Last week, I forced myself out into the cold to witness a local storytelling event. I strolled into our neighborhood high school black box theatre where the backlighting guided me to my seat through a small crowd of 30 waiting for showtime.

Eight of the audience members were first-time storytellers who had recently completed a storytelling class taught by a local story-whisperer. Each of their stories was a well-crafted, intimate memoir addressing topics such as lost love, odd moments of travel, the pursuit of happiness, family dynamics, and shadows of forgotten ancestors. Tears were shed. Laughter was served as the best medicine.

EMPATHY + HARMONY

In the end, as people mingled about chatting about the stories; their quality, their impact, I stepped back to realize the real magic was the bond between the storytellers themselves. Storytelling, as the theory goes, created a magnetic bond.

The magnetic bond in this context is an invisible bond; something you experience when you’re aligned with others around a common experience. Invisible, yet with the ability to harness superpowers.
